THE SECRET WAR

Not all the battles was won on the battlefield. The intelligence, diplomacy and the secret operations, played an important role to both sides...

ULTRA

In the closing months of 1940, the ULTRA team at Bletchley Park made progress in deciphering the army codes used by the Wehrmacht. Army commanders signalled Berlin to give exact descriptions of each unit's condition and location. So, by early 1941, the team at Bletchley Park knew exactly what Britain was up against on the continent. So when Rommel was sent to North Africa with the AfrikaKorps in mid-February, the British knew both the vital statistics and the strategy of their opponent. ULTRA had a Special Liaisons Officer who kept the British commanders, O'Connor, Auchinleck and Alexander respectively, informed of Rommel's intentions and movements in detail. Yet it is to Rommel's credit that he nearly defeated the British on several occasions anyway.
